Ring and Cage.MMA's concept.

Bloody Elbow "Joe Silva Wants A Smaller UFC Cage"

I was reading this article at Bloody Elbow and it prompted me to salvage an old forum post.

Combat sports have always existed in the ring. MMA's cage is a recent deviation in that long history. But what have we taken from the ring? What do we love about the ring?

The ring is smaller than Zuffa's cage, and strikers have used the extra space to innovate combinations, chase strategies, etc. Why did Mirko CroCop fail in the cage? It's the effect of the cage's structure and scale. A big cage makes for more running in circles and less throwing of combinations. I'm not saying it doesn't take skill to win in the cage, but which gets more love from me? Of course, the surface which "combinations and chase strategy." There's more history, skill and maturation.

There are some things I prefer about the cage. In the ring, many fights are interrupted when the fighters reach the edge of the ring and either become entangled in the ropes or are restarted the referee. The cage generally means less need for referee intervention.

Knee strikes have a long history in fight sports. So why are knees to downed opponents banned in the unified rules? This is just my speculation, but I think it's the effect of the American commissions. The U.S. is known for its strong wrestling tradition, and knees to the head on the ground are risky for wrestlers.

There are fighters who wow us with soccer kicks and stops. I think it's hard to make casual fans understand that these techniques are safer than they look. We'll have to wait for people's understanding to catch up before these types of moves are allowed in the cage.

Elbow strikes have a long history, too. Why not adopt them in Japan? I think it's because the Japanese casual audience doesn't like to see blood.

I always wonder how much Vaseline being applied to the face really helps prevent cuts from elbow strikes. Because that's surely the purpose, but at the same time, the Vaseline may help nullify a submission fighter's game. I'm not sure if Vaseline is the best answer or not. On the other hand, Japanese organizations don't use Vaseline on the face. The reason is easy to understand: they've already banned elbows, and the lack of Vaseline ostensibly increases the chances for submissions.

What I think people need to understand is that some fights have to be stopped because of cuts. When you watch Muay Thai or kickboxing (which include elbows), you can see that fighters are proud to earn a TKO victory by cut. Evaluating elbows in MMA is difficult, though, since they're so easy to land on the ground. That's why I think the UFC allows the blood to pool, rather than opting for more early cut stoppages. It should be changed in the future, though.

Shroobi presents Japanese MMA History, Pt.1: Conflict Between Organizations

Here, I'll write about the history of conflict and blame between Japanese MMA orgs. I've added recent remarks from Yuki Nakai to help show how the managers of affiliated gyms view these situations.

Pancrase vs. Rings vs. UWF International

1994
Rings founder Akira Maeda proposes the mutual trade of his pro wrestlers to other promotions, but the organizations deny him.
At this time, only Pancrase is recognized as a legit MMA org.
UWF co-founder Yoji Anjoh's response: "I can beat ya (Maeda), 200%."
This angers Maeda, who retaliates by punching Anjoh at a Samurai TV party.

1995
Rings acquires Maurice Smith, who previously fought in Pancrase.

1997
Rings booker Koichi Kawasaki tries to get Guy Mezger from Pancrase. Pancrase blames Rings, but Rings claims Kawasaki had already resigned. Mezger says Kawasaki tried to make contract with him on Rings' behalf. This causes Pancrase and Rings to hate each other.

Rings also approached Ken Shamrock's Lion's Den gym (of which Mezger was a member) after their deal with Pancrase ended, but failed to reach an agreement.

Meanwhile, Akira Maeda continues to attack Pancrase in the press: "I'm gonna end Pancrase."
One Pancrase fighter from this era, Kazuo "Yoshiki" Takahashi, says he'll fight Maeda one-on-one.
This was during Takahashi's career peak; the same year, he beat Wallid Ismail at UFC 12.
But Maeda rejects Takahashi's challenge, instead wanting to fight Minoru Suzuki.

1999
Yoji Anjoh sucker-punches Maeda from behind at UFC's "Ultimate Japan 2."
Maeda was knocked out. Anjoh claimed it was payback for the earlier altercation.
When Takahashi found out about the incident, he shook hands with Anjoh.

Fans of the various Japanese orgs begin attacking each other. It was more insane than the English-based UFC vs. Pride fan battle. This continued until Maeda's Rings promotion closed down in 2002.

2007
Maeda reveals that he's made peace with Takahashi, facilitated by Tsuyoshi "TK" Kohsaka. Takahashi enters the Maeda-run Hero's ring in 2007.

Shooto vs. Pancrase

2002.05.11
Cobra Kai's Daisuke "13" Hanazawa is unable to participate in a Pancrase event due to injury.
Teammate Dokonjonosuke Mishima wants to participate in his place.
After this, the Shooto commission decides to strip the license of any Shooto fighter who participates in Pancrase.

2002.06.01
Shooto points out that there were worked fights in the early days of Pancrase, and therefore can't stand to exchange fighters.
Shooto and Pancrase also try to poach one another's fighters. The orgs blame each other, and Shooto's solution is to shut off fighters' chances for mutual participation.

2002.09.07
Deep promoter Shigeru Saeki succeeds in making Dokonjonosuke Mishima (Shooto) vs. Takafumi Ito (Pancrase) at Deep's "6th Impact."
The Shooto Commission doesn't avoid this match-up.
Result? Mishima by armbar in 53 seconds.

Two months later, Ito fights Shooto ranker Takuya Wada in Pancrase and wins a decision.

Recent changes (2007)
One of Shooto's most important people, official Taro Wakabayashi, says he will try to solve the old feud with Pancrase. He revealed the reason, because no one knew about the problem. The result is that a Pancrase guy in a Shooto gym can use his name where he really belongs.

PPT (Paraestra Pancrase Team) - Paraestra Tokyo
TEAM JUNKiey - Paraestra Matsudo

Paraestra is one of Shooto's official gym groups. Paraestra's leader, Yuki Nakai, spoke about the org vs. org issue recently.

PPT is over. Yanagisawa into Pancrase with Paraestra Tokyo name.

It's bad that (because) we are from Shooto, our boy has to give up a chance to participate in Pancrase. We can't forget income, enjoy life and fight. It's made a bad image for dojo managers, when fighters have less options to make income. I've always said I accept any fighter and (they) can participate in any org.
Paraestra has Shooto for its fighters. So I don't have plans to make a Paraestra event. If a fighter has skill making his own space in the fight scene to earn money, I think he better do that himself. I think management is important for a fighter's living. I don't think managing fighters is our main job.

Next Karate MMA star?

Katsunori Kikuno is a former Kyokushin karateka who trains at Tsuyoshi Kohsaka's Alliance-Square gym and is also mentored by "TK." Kikuno's trademark skill is a karate kick to the liver, somewhere between a front kick and a roundhouse. It's called the "mikazuki geri," or "crescent kick."

Why has this kick received so much attention? Because it can be used to counter takedown attempts.

Kikuno used a Sanchin (or hourglass) stance against Koichiro Matsumoto in their Deep lightweight title fight, so we're beginning to see the mixture of karate and MMA in his game.

The Sanchin stance basically killed Matsumoto's in-out stepping tactics. When his arms moved forward, it left a perfect opening for a superior kicker like Kikuno.

Cult martial arts in MMA

How do you feel about Koppo.

It probably reminds you of Takumi Yano.

What is Koppo?

Koppo is a martial art developed in China.
But one man says Koppo was created in Japan.

His name is Masashi Horibe. (Yano's mustache is a parody of Horibe's.)

Around 1995, many traditional martial arts tested from one man: Rickson Gracie.

Many traditional martial artists challenged Vale Tudo to make a name for themselves. They also felt pressure from students who wondered, "is this martial art really effective?"

Many old martial arts failed to survive in MMA.

But a few martial artists survived in MMA and created a new wave in Japanese martial arts.

Yoshinori Nishi from Karate challenged Rickson Gracie in Vale Tudo Japan '94 and lost. After that, he developed a group named Wajyutsu Keisyukai.

Nishi said, "I recognized that refusing to fight for fear of defeat is shame.I want to aim my dream 'to be strong man' no matter what happens in my life."

Koppo is one martial art hoping to survive in MMA. Horibe says Koppo skills are effective in MMA.

They send two fighters to MMA event.

It was named "Universal Vale Tudo Fighting 2."

But the Koppo fighters were defeated badly. After that, Horibe decided they wouldn't try MMA again. Many students left Koppo in disappointment.

Takumi Yano is one of those Koppo students.

In 2005, featherweight rankings were crushed by one pupil. His name was Hideo Tokoro.Tokoro knocked out Alexandre Franca Nogueira (known as "Pequeno") by backfist.

After the fight, one interviewer asked him:

"Where did you learn the backfist?"

Tokoro answered:

"I learned it from Oyaizu-san."

Hiroshi Oyaizu was one of the Koppo guys defeated in Universal Vale Tudo Fighting 2. He quit Koppo in 1999 and moved to Paraestra. Oyaizu taught MMA for many guys. He returned to MMA at ZST in 2006.

I don't want to defend Koppo. Horibe lied about Koppo's effectiveness in MMA.But sometimes cult Martial Arts can be effective in MMA. And you should know it.

Of course, the backfist isn't Koppo's originally.

I don't guarantee this information.
I worked hard on this. I'd like to get your response.
